Mysore Style

A Mysore-style* class is the traditional method of teaching and learning Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.

Complete beginners are welcome. In fact, a Mysore-style class is an ideal environment to begin yoga practice. Postures in the Ashtanga series are learned one-by-one, thus easily memorized, with students practicing at a pace measured by their own breath-rhythm. The teacher provides individual instruction and assistance, tailoring the practice to each student. Working at the appropriate level, one-to-one with a teacher is fundamental in developing a safe and fulfilling practice. This method is often called ‘assisted or guided self-practice.’

One of the joys of a Mysore-style class is, students of mixed levels practice together, each according to their own ability. Yet, while benefiting from the supportive group energy of other aspiring practitioners, Mysore-style classes allow each individual to enter a quiet solitude to experience their practice on a deep, meditative level. With steady practice in this manner, Mysore-style classes cultivate a true spirit of yoga — which is why it’s said that, ‘the practice is the true teacher.’

* Mysore is a city in the south of India and home of ‘The Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute’ where its founder, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois taught until his death at the age of 93. His daughter Saraswati and his grandson, Sharath Jois continue to teach mysore style classes to this day.

Counted Class

Counted classes are for experienced ashtanga practitioners.

In a counted class, the teacher calls out the postures and vinyasas (counted movements linking the postures with the breath) of the Ashtanga Primary Series.

The group moves and breathes together in sync. These are focused, highly charged, energetic classes and recommended for experienced students.

A counted Primary Series class is effective in flushing away unconstructive self-practice habits such as a wandering mind, losing the connection with the breath, or fidgeting between postures, and provides an opportunity to refine your practice by following the ‘count’ as it is traditionally prescribed. Chanting is every Friday morning at 540 AM before the virtual led class. No experience needed.
