Welcome to our community!

Ashtanga Yoga Vancouver has been welcoming new students to our community for over 20 years.  Enjoy individualized, one on one attention from our experienced teachers who share their passion of ashtanga yoga with you.

How to Start if you are new to Ashtanga Yoga!

  • If you are new to ashtanga yoga, your starting point is our our Ashtanga Beginner Video Course.

    The introductory course will prepare you with Free breathing, Mulabandha awareness, Surya Namaskara A & B & the first five standing postures. Even if you have different types of yoga experience, this course is essential in teaching you the fundamentals of ashtanga yoga. After taking the Intro Workshop or Video Course, you will be able to attend any of our “Mysore” style classes comfortably and guide yourself through the postures while receiving individualized guidance! Our Mysore Classes are held weekdays Mon-Thursday at 5:30, 7, 8 or 815 am. Classes end at 930am. All classes are by reservation.

  • In Studio Beginner Course - Choose your starting week:

    November 12th

    November 18th

    This course runs for four consecutive weeks starting at 7:45 or 8 am weekdays Monday - Thursdays. You reserve your classes in advance and will be taught Ashtanga Yoga. Join up to four times a week ( no classes on full and new moons and statutory holidays). We recommend a minimum of 2x a week. All classes are by reservation chosen when you register. $160 plus tax.   • The most important part of beginning a practice is to be consistent and regular. A shorter daily practice is better than skipping practice. If you have less time for practice some days, just tell the teacher before you begin your practice.

How to Start if you have an Ashtanga practice already:

  • Tell us about your practice and if you have any body sensitivities that we should be aware of.

  • We currently have space for new students from 7:30am onward.

  • See you on the mat! Remember we also have virtual classes so you can join our virtual classes as well.

About Ashtanga Yoga and “Mysore Style” Classes

Ashtanga Yoga is traditionally and most effectively learned in the individualized setting of Mysore style classes. In our Mysore classes you will be taught the series in a thorough precise manner, one-by-one under the guidance of one of our teachers.

We highly recommend a minimum 3x / week commitment in order to gain the full benefits of the ashtanga yoga practice, develop a relationship with the teacher, and to better suit your specific needs. Ideally, ashtanga yoga should be practiced 6 days each week.

The starting point for Ashtanga is to join one of our Introductory Workshops of the Ashtanga Yoga Beginner Course. Whether you have other yoga experience or not, it’s important to understand the fundamentals of ashtanga yoga before you begin.

Mysore classes are the starting point for your journey. Starting out, you can expect your practice to be approximately one hour, however this varies from student to student. If you only have thirty or ten minutes, you can still come! Just tell the teacher when you start your practice. Consistency is the most important part of the practice.

After attending your introductory course, the best classes to attend for new ashtanga students are the “Mysore” style classes. In this setting, you will be guided individually through the poses. Once you have experience your teacher will let you know when you can attend the led classes.

What to bring

Please bring a yoga mat, towel and wear comfortable clothing. We recommend drinking water 30 minutes after practice and/or one hour before. We do not have shower facilities at this time.

What Pass do I buy?

We have a one month unlimited “introductory” pass for Vancouver residents. This pass can be used once for new students. You can use this pass after you have completed your introductory workshop.

Please note: We answer emails weekdays, Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm. Any emails received over the weekend will be replied to on the following Monday. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

You are welcome to attend any of our led classes if you have experience with the primary series. We have a virtual led class on Fridays at 6 AM. We have optional chanting at 5:40 AM on Fridays.

Please bring a yoga mat, yoga mat towel and small towel for practice. If you are travelling without a yoga mat, we have rentals available: $2 per class (CASH only). We also have yoga mats (Manduka ProLite) and cotton rugs from Mysore, India available for purchase.
